Modi ‘repackaging old projects’, Nitish says
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a special package of Rs 1.25 lakh crore in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections in the state. Addressing a Bharatiya Janata Party rally in the Saharsha district, Modi said that the package would change the “face and fate” the state by enabling its growth and development. Criticising Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the prime minister said that though the Janata Dal (United) leader had failed to use funds allocated to the state, he was asking for more money “for the sake of politics”. Kumar later rebutted Modi’s claims and said that the schemes announced by the BJP leader were simply a “repackaging of old projects”.
PMO urges veterans to end OROP stir
The Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday urged ex-servicemen to end their agitation demanding the immediate implementation of the One Rank One Pension scheme. The PMO also called on the three military veterans undertaking a fast-unto-death to end their strike. At a meeting with the PM’s Principal Secretary, Nripendra Misra, representatives for the agitating ex-servicemen asked the Cetntral government to give “a firm date” for putting the scheme into practice. Misra did not do so. It has been estimated that implementing OROP for the country's 25 lakh veterans would cost the exchequer up to Rs 16,600 crore.
Rahul accuses government of crony capitalism
Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused the Narendra Modi-led government of working for capitalists. Addressing a gathering of his constituents at Amethi, Gandhi said that Modi’s National Democratic Alliance government wanted to grab farmers’ lands through the amended Land Acquisition Bill. Claiming that the government was implementing “anti-people” policies, Gandhi said that the Congress was the only party that could protect the interests of ordinary people.
Police arrest four FTII students during midnight raid
Four students from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune were arrested in a midnight raid by the Maharashtra Police on Tuesday on charges of manhandling the Institute’s staff and destroying property. The raid followed a complaint by FTII Director Prashant Pathrabe that he had been gheraoed because he decided to proceed with the assessment of student assignments. While the police had aimed to arrest 17 students, they were unable to do so due to procedural lapses. The students have been boycotting classes since June 12 to protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as FTII Director.
Swaraj, Jaitley ‘tussle’ cause of Lalitgate: Digvijaya
Congress General-Secretary Digvijaya Singh on Tuesday said that revelations about the scandal involving former Indian Premier League Chairperson Lalit Modi had come to light due to a “tussle” between Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. Singh alleged that the request to Interpol for a blue-corner notice against Modi was turned into a request for a red-corner notice due to Jaitley’s intervention in the matter. The Congress leader said that the row started after a committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India headed by Jaitley recommended strong action against Modi. Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje have been accused of improprieties over their alleged links with the former IPL Chief.
