Bihar: State needs Centre’s support, Nitish says
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday criticised the Narendra Modi-led Central government for failing to grant special status to the state, claiming that this had hampered Bihar’s development. He said that the state needed the Centre’s support in terms of policy. The issue of granting special category status to Bihar has been an important for both Kumar's Janata Dal (United) and Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party in their campaigns for the upcoming state assembly elections.
Jammu and Kashmir: DeM chief booked
The Jammu and Kashmir police on Sunday registered a case against Dukhtaran-e-Millat chief Syeda Aasiya Andrabi for raising Pakistani flags in the state. The head of the hardline women’s organisation was booked a day after she fuelled controversy by addressing a rally held by the Jamat-ud-Dawa by telephone. The Pakistani outfit is headed by Hafeez Saeed, the prime accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks case. A video of the Pakistani flag being raised by the DeM chief and her subsequent speech was later posted on social networking websites.
Punjab: Sidhu ends fast
Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Parliamentary Secretary Navjot Kaur Sidhu on Sunday ended her 30-hour-long hunger strike against the Punjab government after she was assured that her constituency would receive a Rs 10 crore grant. Sidhu, who had been protesting against the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government in the state, ended her fast after state Cabinet Minister Anil Joshi assured her that tenders for developmental works in her constituency of Amritsar (East) would be floated soon. However, Joshi said that he had met with Sidhu of his own volition and had not come as a representative of the state government. The MLA’s protest has been seen as proof of a rift within the ruling SAD-BJP alliance in the state.
Madhya Pradesh: Tweet about Vyapam, Digvijay tells Modi
Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Sunday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to write about the multi-crore-rupee Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh on Twitter. Hours after Modi tweeted about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s performance in municipal elections throughout the state, Singh said that Modi also needed to talk about the “wrongdoings” of Ministers such as Union minister Sushma Swaraj and Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde. The Congress leader alleged that the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government in the state was responsible for the Vyapam scam, which involved massive illegalities in examinations and recruitment drives held for public jobs in Madhya Pradesh.
Maharashtra: Pawar to meet Modi, Jaitley over farmer loans
Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar on Sunday said that he would meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to discuss restructuring farmers’ loans in Maharashtra. “There should be no politics over farmers’ loans,” Pawar told a gathering in the Marathwada district of the state. “Farmers battling drought need immediate relief.” The Marathwada region is one of the worst-affected by droughts in Maharashtra.
