Tamil Nadu: Court tells Maran to surrender in three days
The Madras High Court on Monday cancelled the interim bail granted to former Union Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, who now faces arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Maintaining that the CBI's allegations against him in an illegal telephone exchange case were substantial, the court directed Maran to surrender within three days, failing which it allowed the Bureau to "take action in accordance with the law". The decision was also taken keeping in mind a report filed the agency that Maran was not cooperating with the investigation. The Bureau had registered a First Information Report against Maran, alleging that the Central exchequer lost an estimated Rs.1.8 crore after more than 300 high-speed telephone lines were set up in his Chennai home during his tenure as Union Minister.
Madhya Pradesh: CBI starts enquiry into death of Governor’s son
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday registered a preliminary inquiry into the death of Shailesh Yadav, the son of Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav. Shailesh was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his home in Lucknow on March 25, after his name came up in the multi-crore Vyapam cash-for-jobs scam in the state. State police had claimed that the exact cause of his death could not be ascertained. Besides registering the inquiry, the CBI also filed six more First Information Reports into alleged corruption in the conduct of examinations and recruitment tests conducted by the Vyapam Board.
Andhra Pradesh: YSR Congress calls for state-wide bandh
YSR Congress president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday called for a state-wide bandh in Andhra Pradesh on August 28 to press for special status to be granted to the state. The party accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of "searching for reasons to evade the special status issue". It also accused the ruling Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh of being silent on the demand.
Maharashtra: Probe ordered into Louis Berger deals
The Maharashtra government on Monday ordered an initial inquiry into the contracts signed by Louis Berger, a US project management consultant. State Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that a full-fledged inquiry would be set up if any irregularities were found in the contracts awarded to the firm, which is currently being investigated by Goan authorities after allegations that it had bribed key politicians. In Maharashtra, the firm was involved in the Mumbai Metro project and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. Last month, the firm admitted to a US court that it had paid bribes to officials to secure contracts in Goa and Assam.
Delhi: BJP accuses AAP MLA of vandalism
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday accused Aam Aadmi Party MLA Alka Lamba of vandalism and demanded an apology from the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for her alleged actions. Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay alleged that Lamba and her supporters had vandalised parts of the Hanuman Mandir Complex on Sunday, adding that the incident had been recorded on security camera. Meanwhile, the BJP rallied behind party MLA OP Sharma after Lamba accused him of having orchestrated an attack on her on Sunday. Lamba suffered a minor head injury after a man allegedly threw a stone at her during an anti-narcotics drive. AAP said that the BJP was making "futile attempts" to divert public attention from an attack on the MLA.
