West Bengal: Chief Minister cuts short London trip
The West Bengal government on Thursday sounded a high alert in the southern regions of the state as a cyclone neared landfall in neighbouring Bangladesh. The Trinamool Congress-led government said that it had opened a helpline to monitor any floods that may caused by the cyclone, which has been named Komen by officials. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cut short a trip to London and returned to Kolkata on Thursday afternoon to monitor the situation. Fishermen were advised to not venture out to sea for the next 72 hours.
Gujarat: 14-year-old rape survivor allowed to have abortion
A medical team constituted by the Supreme Court on Thursday allowed a 14-year-old rape survivor in Gujarat to terminate her pregnancy in the 25th week. The approval of the medical team was considered to be a landmark case as the law allows for abortions only until the 20th week of pregnancy. The medical team of five doctors held that the termination of the pregnancy was critical for the girl's health. The girl had approached the apex court after the Gujarat High Court dismissed her petition seeking permission to terminate the pregnancy. The girl was raped by her doctor, whom she visited for typhoid treatment earlier this year.
Delhi: Four arrested in admission racket
The Delhi Police on Thursday arrested four people in connection with an admission scam that was allegedly being run across several Delhi University colleges. The racket involved forging academic certificates from the Bihar and Uttar Pradesh examination boards to ensure admission for candidates. The touts charged students between Rs 3 lakhs and Rs 7 lakhs for admissions. Institutions under investigation in the racket include thee Hindu College, Kirori Mal College, Ram Lal Anand College, the Kamla Nehru College and the Dayal Singh College.
Jammu and Kashmir: State will get AIIMS branch
Union Health Minister JP Nadda has announced the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences unit in Jammu in the wake of demand from locals. The Centre had announced plans to set up AIIMS units in six states in order to cater to the increasingly growing demands for more high-quality medical facilities across the country.

Hundreds of students clashed with police officials in Bihar's Chapra town and vandalised a government college after being denied admissions to it. The students were unable to secure admissions due a to lack of seats. Some of the students set a bus on fire and hurled stones at police officials.
