Jammu and Kashmir: Curfew imposed in Jammu city
One person was killed and dozens injured in clashes between Sikh protesters and police in Jammu city on Thursday. The clashes and protests began after a hoarding bearing the photograph of slain separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was removed on Wednesday. Police forces lathi-charged and fired teargas shells at the protesters after some of them began pelting stones. A senior Jammu Police official said that a curfew had been imposed in parts of the city. The Army also staged a flag march on one of Jammu’s main roads. However, protests later spread to other parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The organisers of an event who had put up the hoarding said that they had been holding a function every year to commemorate those killed during Operation Blue Star, including Bhindranwale.
Bihar: 'JD(U)-RJD-Congress alliance inevitable'
A political alliance between the Janata Dal (United), the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress for the upcoming assembly polls in Bihar was “bound to happen”, JD(U) President Sharad Yadv said on Thursday. Dismissing speculation that talks between his party and the RJD were breaking down over the issue of who it would field as a chief ministerial candidate, Yadav expressed confidence that the coalition would be cemented. However, he refused to give a date by which the alliance would be formalised.
Gujarat: Paswan criticises Somnath restrictions
Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Thursday criticised the decision of the authorities at the Somnath temple in Gujarat to restrict the entry of non-Hindus without appropriate permission. The Narendra Modi government did not endorse any discrimination on the basis of religion, he insisted. The temple authorities said that they had the taken the decision due to security concerns as well as to protect the sanctity of the shrine.
Maharashtra: AAP accuses BJP of shielding Ajit Pawar
The Maharashtra unit of the Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in the state of protecting Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar from direct questioning by the Anti-Corruption Bureau in the irrigation scam case. Describing the ACB’s decision to send Pawar a questionnaire a mockery of the probe, AAP spokesperson PS Menon said that the Bureau was conducting a “slack inquiry”.
Karnataka: State to bill Tamil Nadu for Jaya trial
The Karnataka government on Thursday decided to bill the Tamil Nadu administration for the Rs 5.12 crore it had spent on legal expenses during the trial of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case. The case was transferred to a Karnataka court in 2003 following instructions from the Supreme Court. State law minister said that the costs would increase as the government had decided to appeal her acquittal by the Karnataka High Court.
