Haryana: Sixth witness in case to be attacked
Two unidentified assailants on Wednesday attacked a key witness in the sexual assault case on self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s son, Narayan Sai. The attackers shot Mahender Chawla near his home in the village of Panipat, also making him the sixth witness related to the case to be attacked. Two other witnesses have died. "We are trying to identify the assailants," said a Haryana Police official. Chawla is reported to be stable. Sai was being held in a Surat jail for sexual assaulting a woman in his ashram between 2002 and 2005. He was granted bail for three weeks by Gujarat High Court in April.
Tamil Nadu: Jayalalithaa to take oath next week
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief Jayalalithaa is likely to be reinstated as chief minister of Tamil Nadu next week, after she was acquired in a disproportionate assets case on Monday, the party said on Wednesday. "Before Jayalalithaa takes over as the CM, she will go through the judgment to be thorough with it," said party leader CR Saraswati. "It is more than 900 pages long. She is also waiting for the right time before making any announcement." The judge ruled that prosecution had miscalculated her assets and the wealth of the AIADMK chief was disproportionate by 8.12%, below the permissible limit.
Delhi: State won't allow allow FDI in retail sector
Delhi government will not introduce Foreign Direct Investment in retail sector, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Wednesday. "The Delhi government will reiterate its stand to the central government to remove all ambiguity on the issue, which may arise due to the fresh policy document of the Centre,” the Aam Aadmi Party-led government said. His statement came after Centre announced on Wednesday that it would retain a 51% cap for FDI in multi-brand retail.
Telangana: Rahul plans padyatra to assess farm
Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi will embark on a 15-kilometer-long walk in Adilabad district to Telangana on Friday to assess issues faced by farmers. This is his first visit to the state after it separated from Andhra Pradesh in June, when the Congress was in power at the centre. "He will meet and console the families of farmers who have allegedly committed suicide due to agrarian distress in Telangana and console them," said Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, president of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee. Gandhi went on similar walk in Amravati and in Punjab in recent weeks.
Jammu and Kashmir: Alleged militants after 20 years
Two people, including a Pakistani national, were acquitted of terror charges on Wednesday, 20 years after they were detained. Syed Sajjad Bukhari of Pakistan and Riyaz Ahmad Haji of Kashmir were held in 1995 for their alleged involvement in terrorist activities. First Additional Sessions Judge, Mohan Singh Parihar acquitted them after the prosecution failed to prove the charges. Bukhari was lodged in a Punjab jail while Riyaz was held in Uttar Pradesh. The latter was granted bail by court earlier but was detained under the Public Safety Act.
