Political intrigue, magic, riveting plotlines, warring families, nudity, violence – no wonder the blockbuster American fantasy drama series Game of Thrones is a hit in India. Which is why when news broke that the series is all set to inspire an Indian television show titled Rani Mahal, it inspired instantaneous hilarity on social media.
That it would star Sakshi Tanwar only added to the grapevine that has been abuzz ever since it was revealed that the actress who rose to fame with Ekta Kapoor’s Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki is slated to play the role modelled after Daenerys Targaryen, while Yeh Mohabbatein star Anita Hassanandani is cast in the role of Cersei Lannister and Parth Samthaan from MTV’s Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan, is set to play Jon Snow.
Photoshopped images and parody videos have already started doing the rounds, and jokes abound as people try to wrap their heads around the idea, speculating on what the adaptation, if it indeed is that, would be like.
A Facebook page even went ahead to wrap up some scenes from original title sequence of Game of Thrones with the title song of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki as the background score, and the result may well prove to be a precursor to how the planned show turns out.
And, while we are on the subject of ripoffs, and if "Game of Thrones" is not quite your cup of tea, Sony seems to have one coming up on "Newsroom" too:
