On March 24,  in a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court struck down Section 66A of the amended Information Technology Act 2000, in its entirety, holding it responsible for "arbitrarily, excessively and disproportionately" invading the right of free speech.

The outpouring of emotions was spontaneous, particularly on social media, as that is what was impacted the most by the law that had originally been intended to fight spammers but was misused with impunity primarily to protect the egos of politicians who could not take dissent.

Perhaps no other judgement in recent times had been awaited with such a collective bated breath as the one by Justice J Chelameswar and Justice Rohinton F Nariman, and none was celebrated with such unrestrained whoops of joy.
