It seemed like with every wicket of England's to fall, the support for Bangladesh increased. In a must win match for both teams in this crucial Pool A encounter, England had won the toss and put Bangladesh in to bat. James Anderson finally found some form and took two wickets in his first seven balls to reduce Bangladesh to 8-2. From then on, it was all Bangladesh. Mahmudullah struck a beautiful innings of 103 and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim backed him up with 89 runs. Bangladesh ended with 275-7 a competitive total at the Adelaide Oval.
England started their innings with relative ease, only losing 2 wickets in the first 26 overs. Then came the double blow. Rubel Hossain dismissed both Ian Bell and Eoin Morgan in the same over. From 121-2, England were suddenly reeling at 163-6 and they never recovered from there. Jos Buttler was their last hope but once he fell, the match was pretty much over.
Bangladesh eventually won by 15 runs and are now guaranteed a position in the quarter-finals; only their second time in their World Cup history. Last time was during the 2007 World Cup. Coincidentally, Bangladesh had beaten England by 2 wickets in the 2011 World Cup.
The Bangladeshi captain Mushrafe Murtaze dedicated this victory to "Bangladesh's freedom fighters and to everyone at home working hard".
Remember, just over a month ago, England had comfortably beaten India. How the tables have turned now. Bangladesh now have 7 points from 5 matches and in all likelihood will play India in the last quarter-final in Wellington on March 21.
