The 87th Academy Awards opened to a rather wet day. The umbrellas were out, there was no sign of a clear sky, but rain did little to wash away the glamour on the red carpet. It was a ‘traffic jam of famous stars’ in the words of Emma Stone who walked in with her mother Krista Stone instead of longtime boyfriend Andrew Garfield.
What worked on the red carpet and what didn’t?
The YAYs
Dakota Johnson, the Fifty Shades of Grey star, looked every inch perfect in a Saint Laurent gown. Don’t miss the subtle reference she made to her movie with that shimmering knot on her red dress. While we were still trying to get over her, in walked Lupita Nyong’o in a Calvin Klein Collection gown with six thousand embellished pearls (yes, you read that right).
Emma Stone was a winner in her Elie Saab outfit and Jennifer Lopez took perfection to another level as she walked down the red carpet right out of a fairy tale. Julianne Moore in a Chanel gown is on the list of YAYs too.
Eddie Redmayne wore an Alexander McQueen outfit to the Oscars. The navy tuxedo and bow tie placed him among the best dressed men on the red carpet. Benedict Cumberbatch looked dapper in white.
Rosamund Pike put her best foot forward in a Givenchy gown. (Would anyone risk getting to the wrong side of the Gone Girl star, now?)
The NAYs:
Marion Cottilard, who usually ranks among the best dressed celebrities on the red carpet, hardly made it to that list this time. It was a loud ‘no’ from every fashion enthusiast the moment she turned to reveal a black fastener behind her dress!
Should Lady Gaga be on the list of the worst dressed celebrities? It’s tough to make that call anymore. The red gloves were a complete mismatch, but then that’s Lady Gaga for you. Boyhood director Richard Linklater’s daughter Lorelei Linklater was a complete NAY.
The gorgeous Scarlett Johansson could have done without that green necklace and escaped being on the list of worst dressed celebs. Surprise entry: Naomi Watts. The black band on an otherwise stunning black and white down pulled her down to the bottom.
What’s Twitter saying about their favourite stars on the red carpet?
