The Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 remains one of the worst natural disasters of all time. Caused by a 9.1-magnitude undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia, it sent waves over 100 feet high. Within minutes, the waves struck Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India.
The tsunami left widespread devastation in its wake. More than 227,000 people were killed and over 1.7 million people rendered homeless in 15 countries spanning two continents. India, Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka were the worst affected. The plight of those affected prompted an international humanitarian response.
