West Bengal: Jadavpur students refuse to accept degrees in VC’s presence
The 69th annual convocation at the Jadavpur University in Kolkata turned into an embarrassment for the authorities when a student refused to accept her certificate as protest against the university’s vice-chancellor, Abhijeet Chakraborty. Students have been demanding action against Chakraborty for allegedly ordering police to lathi-charge the students during a demonstration against a molestation incident in September. Another student accepted his certificate but then raised a placard that read, “Resignation, No Negotiation”, also addressed to the VC.
Maharashtra: IS’s Kalyan recruits may have tweeted through proxy server in UAE
On Thursday, state police said that a recent tweet thought to have been posted by one of the Kalyan youth who joined the Islamic State came through a proxy server in the UAE. The tweet, supposedly by Fahad Sheikh, said India was targeted in 2008 in retaliation for a particular community having financed riots and killing innocents. Intelligence authorities have contacted Twitter to ascertain the origin of the message.

Following the acid-attack on a 26-year-old woman in west Delhi last week, the central government approved steps aimed at creating a mechanism for quick relief and rehabilitation of the acid attack victims on Wednesday. The Ministry of Home Affairs also said that it was working on a web application to regulate the sale of acid and developing a mechanism to provide cashless treatment to acid-attack survivors.
Tamil Nadu: Man who raped two minor girls sentenced to life
A mahila court in Coimbatore on Wednesday sentenced a 23-year-old man to 44 years of rigorous imprisonment and two life-terms for having kidnapped and raped two minor girls from a children’s home six months ago. The court also held the management of the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church Children’s Home responsible for the incident for having run the place without a license for 20 years and for "allowing anti-social elements to enter the campus". The state government announced a compensation of Rs 3 lakh for the victims.
Jharkhand: Policeman killed during Maoist attack
During an attack in Chatra district, Maoists killed a police constable and injured two soldiers. The local superintendent of police said the attackers’ target was a police party, which led to an encounter at a nearby temple. The attack comes as the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to form the government in the state.
