The Shiv Sena on Monday reached an agreement with the Bharatiya Janata Party to form a coalition government in Maharashtra, according to media reports. The finer details of this alliance, however, are still being worked out before a formal announcement is made later in the day. The results on Sunday had given BJP 122 of the 288 seats in the state assembly, falling 22 short of a majority. Before the assembly elections in Maharashtra, both parties had severed their 25-year-old alliance over disputes regarding seat-sharing.

Haryana: Bhupinder Singh Hooda resigns from the post of CM
Senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda resigned from the post of chief minister on Sunday, after his party lost the Haryana assembly elections. Out of 90 assembly seats that were contested, the Congress secured only 15 seats, finishing third behind the Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Lok Dal. Meanwhile, after accepting his party's defeat, Hooda urged the new BJP-led government to continue the "good work" done by the previous Congress regime.

Kerala: Small-scale farmers hit by fall in prices of green tea leaves
Small-scale tea growers who own less than five acres of land are suffering in Kerala due to the fall in green tea prices, according to The Hindu. The spot prices for green tea leaves fell to Rs 8 per kg on Saturday, from Rs 13 a kg in the corresponding period last year. "We are forced to sell our produce at a throw away price to agents from Tamil Nadu owing to the dearth in tea processing factories here," a small-scale farmer said, adding that a farmer must get at least Rs 18 per kg to make ends meet.

Tamil Nadu: Rajnikanth, Maneka Gandhi greet Jayalalithaa, much to BJP's unhappiness
Days after former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was released on bail by the Supreme Court in a disproportionate assets case, actor Rajnikanth and Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi offered their support to the embattled leader on Sunday. This development irked the Bharatiya Janata Party unit in Tamil Nadu, as it had hoped to induct Rajniknath into the party. Sources in the Tamil Nadu film industry, however, claim that Rajnikanth's move arrives in an effort to ward off possible hindrances to the release of his movie Lingaa, slated for release in December.

Delhi: Delhi cops seize 16 kg of heroin
The Delhi Police Special Cell, in collaboration with their counterparts in Tamil Nadu, seized 16 kg of heroin, worth Rs 50 crore that was bound for South India. The police have arrested two Sri Lankans in connection to the case. They were allegedly part of an international drug smuggling syndicate based out of Dubai. The drugs were being transported to South India as part of a consignment of canned seafood. Investigators have revealed that the drugs were sourced from Afghanistan and were brought into India through the Punjab border.
