Quite by coincidence, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagamchief J Jayalalithaa was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court of India in the disproportionate asset case on the day her party was observing the 43rd anniversary of its founding.  The politician's supporters celebrated the decision with characteristic enthusiasm at the party headquarters in Chennai and outside the Bangalore jail in which she has been held since September 27.

The former Tamil Nadu chief minister was granted bail on health grounds, on the condition that she stays confined in her home and does not receive any visitors. She was asked to assure the court that she would not seek any adjournments  and that she will within two months file the paper-book containing an abstract of all the facts and pleadings necessary for a complete understanding of a case.

Jayalalithaa cannot contest any elections until a final decision is made in the case.
