The Congress party sacked spokesperson Shashi Tharoor late on Monday afternoon for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accepting his invitation on October 2 to support the Swachh Bharat campaign. "I am treating this matter as closed and have no further comment to make," Tharoor said.
As Tharoor accepted his party's decision, other Congress leaders were justifying his removal. Party spokesperson Shobha Oza said the decision had nothing to do with the new developments in the Sunanda Pushkar death case. Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Tharoor as a spokesperson was supposed to speak about the party and not himself.
The BJP jumped at the Congress party and said that all was not well within the organisation. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra reminded the Congress that Modi's initiatives are for the nation as a whole and that everything shouldn't be seen with a political view. BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, "If this goes on, soon only Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi will be left in the Congress."
Digvijay Singh, Congress party general secretary seemed to be the only one supporting Tharoor and said he had done nothing wrong.
#Tharoor and #TharoorSacked became the top trending topics on Twitter immediately after.
Here is what the Twitter world had to say.
