Airstrikes against IS are not working, say Kurdish fighters
Kurdish fighters in Syria claimed on Monday that US-led airstrikes were doing little to keep the Islamic State from advancing towards more regions on the Turkish border, two weeks after Washington extended its air campaign from Iraq to Syria. The Kurdish forces say they need ground support in the form of weapons and ammunition because the IS militants have adapted their techniques to tackle airstrikes. The extremist group is closing in on the Kobani region along the Syria-Turkey border as intense fighting continues with the Kurdish troops.

Most schools and government offices in Hong Kong reopened on Monday as pro-democracy protests began to dwindle after a week of mass street rallies. The protesters that remained outside government buildings blocked the entrances only partially but allowed workers to pass through. Student groups have begun preparing for negotiations on political reforms with government officials. The Occupy Central campaign, which started the peaceful demonstrations, led to city-wide protests calling for greater democracy in territory.
Sierra Leone records 121 Ebola deaths in a single day
One hundred and twenty one people died from Ebola on Saturday, according to government health statistics released on Sunday. In addition to the deaths, 81 new cases of the virus were also reported on the same day. Britain , Cuba and China have deployed medical personnel to Sierra Leone to control the spread of the Ebola epidemic. The death toll from the epidemic reached 3,439 out of a total of 7,492 cases in West Africa.
Israel slams Sweden oven Palestine
Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday dismissed newly-elected Swedish prime minister Stefan Lofven's pledge to recognise the state of Palestine. Lieberman criticised the move as a rushed decision and an ill-considered one in the absence of Middle East negotiations. He further summoned Sweden's ambassador in Tel Aviv to the ministry to discuss the issue. Lofven had announced the decision during his inaugural address to Stockholm's parliament on Friday.
Dilma Rousseff wins first round of Brazil elections
Brazil's incumbent president Dilma Rouseff won the most number of votes in the country's presidential elections on Sunday but fell short of a clear majority. Rouseff, who belongs the Workers' Party, faces a run-off against Aecio Neves of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party. In the total vote counted, Rouseff won 41.5% against Neves' 33.6%. The second round of elections will be held on October 26.
