Taking the long view, no one should be surprised by the reported incursion by 1,000 Chinese troops in the Chumar sector of Ladakh this week. China's quest for increased control over Asia dates back to 221 BC. This has resulted in Beijing being embroiled in territorial conflicts along its land borders and at sea.

China's claims to the energy-rich East and South China seas overlap with that of five other countries. China's disputes with India along the Himalayas have also been active for decades, with hardly any sign of abatement.
