By-election results for 33 assembly and three Lok Sabha seats spread across Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam, Sikkim, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat will be announced today. The Bharatiya Janata Party is hoping to bounce back after last month's loss to the Congress-led alliance in key assembly by-elections across Bihar, Uttarakhand and Karnataka.
Uttar Pradesh: There is no 'love jihad', says state government
The Uttar Pradesh government told the Allahabad High Court on Monday that there was no "love jihad" in the state, while responding to the public interest litigation. The court, however, sought the UP government's response to the PIL seeking a ban on the term "love jihad", in two weeks. The Election Commission of India, Bharatiya Janata Party Parliamentarian Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister Kalraj Mishra and the UP government, have been made respondents in the petition. In the run up to assembly by-elections in UP, BJP leaders had constantly accused Muslim men of conducting "love jihad" to woo women of other communities in order to convert them to Islam.
Maharashtra: State cyber crime cell nabs tiger poachers
The Melghat cyber crime cell nabbed 34 persons accused of poaching tigers, including the main suspect Ranjeet, who hails from Andhra Pradesh. The police nabbed Ranjeet after tracking him for days. "Tracking Ranjeet took eight days, 16 hours per day," said the cyber cell's nodal officer. "It was very difficult to track him as he kept changing his phones."
Jammu and Kashmir: Separatist leader accused of disrupting relief efforts
Armed forces personnel have accused Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik of trying to disrupt relief efforts in the wake of devastating floods in the state. Officials in the armed forces said that Yasin Malik and his followers forced ailing women passengers to get off an army relief boat, despite protests from other women nearby. Malik is alleged to have told the boat patrol that they didn't want help from the Indian armed forces. Another separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani had reportedly asked the Pakistani army for aid.
Andhra Pradesh: CM holds first 'paperless' cabinet meeting
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu conducted the first 'paperless' cabinet meeting on Monday. His ministers brought iPads installed with e-Cabinet applications to the meeting instead of bundles of files and papers. The meeting marked Telugu Desam Party's first 100 days in power.
