Though the daily headlines may suggest otherwise, the era we live in is believed to be the most peaceful century in history. However, according to the Global Peace Index of 2014, the last seven years has seen a drastic deterioration in global peace levels.
The prolonged humanitarian crisis in Syria, the Sudanese civil war and the recently developed Ukraine crisis are among the top conflicts that have led to the increase in global violence. The study conducted by the Institute for Economics and Peace ranks 162 countries according to their peace levels, using indicators like military expenditure, displacement and refugee figures, and extent of domestic and international conflict.
Since the previous report, India dropped two places to occupy the 143rd position. Iceland, Denmark and Austria rank the highest in the index while Syria has replaced Afghanistan as the world's least- peaceful country.
