Australia agrees to become 'long-term reliable supplier' of uranium
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Tony Abbot oversaw the signing of a civilian nuclear cooperation deal between both countries on Friday. Australia, which possesses the world's third-largest reserves of uranium, agreed to the deal despite India's reluctance to sign Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. “From the time of Independence, India has scrupulously followed international laws regardless of the ups and downs of the political situation in New Delhi," Abbot said. "There is a very high level of trust between us, and that is why we are signing this agreement.”

Home Ministry seeks 'suitable land' for Kashmiri Pandits
Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday asked the Omar Abdullah government to find "suitable land" for the rehabilitation of approximately three lakh Pandit families in Kashmir, who migrated from the region during the onset of militancy in the early 1990s. In its union budget, the Centre had earmarked Rs 500 crore for this project. Separatists and political parties in Kashmir have welcomed the return of Pandits, but are vehemently opposed to creating separate colonies for them.
Release all under-trial prisoners who have served half their sentences, says SC
In its bid to free up overcrowded prisons, the apex court on Friday ordered all local judges and magistrates to oversee the release of under-trial prisoners, who have already served half their maximum sentences. However, prisoners facing possible death sentences are not eligible for relief. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, Indian prisons currently hold over 2.54 lakh under-trial inmates.
Survivors' blood may be used to treat Ebola patients
At the meeting of the World Health Organisation in Geneva on Friday, medical experts suggested that blood drawn from survivors of the Ebola virus could be used to treat patients suffering from the disease. Urgent discussions on the rapid spread of this disease also revolved around fast-tracking various vaccines and treatment procedures for testing. The disease has so far infected 2,100 people globally, of which half are dead.
