Amitabh Bachchan announced on Thursday that he had stopped endorsing Pepsi after a Jaipur school girl asked him why he was promoting a product her teacher had called "poison".

The actor told the audience at a branding conference at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad that he does a great deal of research before endorsing a product. He meets the client personally and asks to go through the audit books of the company before agreeing to promote it. He also refuses to endorse alcohol or cigarette brands as they are unhealthy and he doesn't use them himself.

Bachchan is among the country's top celebrity endorsers, promoting brands such as Maggi, the instant noodle maker, Kalyan Jewellers, Binani Cement and Gujarat Tourism. Despite acting in only one film in 2013 ('Satyagraha'), Bachchan's earnings from his endorsements led to a 27% increase in his income last year, the highest increase among India's top ten celebrities.

Bachchan told the audience at the branding conference that he does his own due diligence on a product. These are some of the brands of which he approves.

1) Navratna Oil

2) Boroplus antiseptic cream

3) Binani Cement

4) Parle Goldstar Cookies

5) Durex Condoms
