After its astonishing advances in the Delhi assembly election that allowed it to form the government in the state, the Aam Aadmi Party delivered quickly on some of its promises, such as free water, electricity at half the price, and cancelling permission for foreign investment retail. But its decision to stage a sit-in to demand that control of the Delhi police be transferred from the central government to the state invited the displeasure of many– and colourful epithets to boot.
None of these should surprise or offend AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. Over the past few months, he's been the subject of many creative metaphors. Here are some of the names he's been called.
1) AAP is the item girl of politics: Chetan Bhagat
Author Chetan Bhagat on Wednesday said that AAP's decision to stage a two-day dharna this week made it seem like a struggling actress who resorts to dancing with revealing clothes to gain attention.
2) Even Rakhi Sawant can govern better: Uddhav Thackeray
Shv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray advanced Chetan Bhagat's imagery. In an editorial in his party's newspaper 'Saamna', he said that even item girl Rakhi Sawant could govern better than AAP.
3) Yeda (insane): Sushil Kumar Shinde
Grumbling to the security cover he had to provide for AAP's demonstration, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Wednesday grumbled that "because of a yeda mukhyamantri, he had to cancel the leaves of policemen". 'Yeda' is Marathi slang for an insane or deranged person.
4) Arvind Kejriwal is like Baba Ramdev: Congress
Before AAP's successful bid in the Delhi poll, Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal dismissed Kejriwal as a publicity hound not unlike the controversial yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who is the butt of several jokes himself.
5) AAP is a group of broom-wielding men from Ghaziabad: Sheila Dikshit
Before the counting began for the Delhi elections, Sheila Dikshit, who was chief minister at the time, dismissed AAP by making light of their election symbol. Little did she know that they'd sweep her out of power.
