Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kyrgyzstani President Almazbek Atambayev on Tuesday agreed to sign seven memoranda of understanding, including on a bilateral investment treaty, to boost flow of investment in both countries, reported The Hindu. The MoUs will be inked for better cooperation in the fields of agriculture, broadcasting, culture, tourism and youth affairs.

The leaders also agreed to strengthen ties in the defence, security, mining, IT, agriculture and energy sectors, reported PTI. “We agreed on the need to coordinate and work closely to address and overcome challenges for our common benefit,” said Modi.

The prime minister also hailed the Kyrgyz-India Mountain Biomedical Research Center as an excellent example of a successful collaboration, adding that work was underway for a Kyrgyz-India Joint Military Training Center in Kyrgyzstan. While the biomedical research centre will try to assess the impact on soldiers during operations at high altitudes, the training center will carry out joint military exercises.

They also decided to step up their cooperation in their fight against militancy, extremism and radicalism. “In this context, they also called for the adoption of the draft Comprehensive Convention on Combating International Terrorism by the United Nations,” read a joint statement issued by the two leaders.

Atambayev highlighted the historical links and common values, such as democracy and freedom of rights, between the two countries and also called for the two countries to explore together the “huge untapped potential” for the expansion of bilateral trade between them.

Earlier in the day, President Atambayev was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He is on a four-day official tour to India.
