The fifth Test may be taking in Chennai but it is the batsmen from neighbouring Karnataka who are putting England to the sword in this match.

After KL Rahul’s epic ended in heartbreak on Sunday, Karun Nair continued from where he had left off and made his way to his first century in Test cricket, in only his third match. The morning session was not particularly easy to bat through - England’s debutant left arm spinner Liam Dawson got perceptible rip and turn and even got the ball to keep low. Nair also got lucky when a steepler from Broad caught the shoulder of his bat while he was trying to leave, but managed to go through a vacant third slip to the boundary.

But as the morning progressed, Nair settled in, shepherded by Murali Vijay at the other who provided calm and composure. He hit Dawson for a six and then got to a much-deserved century. More importantly, he did not lose his composure after the landmark was reached and remained unbeaten at lunch on 122.

Vijay had a lucky reprieve on 21 when the umpires failed to detect a nick, but England had no reviews left. But it did not really cost them a lot as seven runs later, Dawson got his first Test wicket rapping Vijay plumb in front of his stumps. That was the only wicket England got in a session where India edged closer and closer to England’s total, trailing by just 14 at the end.

Brief scores:

India 463/5 (KL Rahul 199; Karun Nair 122 not out; Stuart Broad 1/55, Ben Stokes 1/63) trail England 477 by 14 runs
