The Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, more popularly known as Motera Stadium is set to become the biggest cricket venue in the world in terms of capacity, The Times of India reported on Friday.

The old structure has already been razed with work on the new stadium is expected to commence shortly. The stadium will house 1,10,000 people, the Gujarat Cricket Association said in a statement.

The new Motera Stadium is set to surpass the Melbourne Cricket Ground which has a capacity of 1,00,024 people.

“The ground is ready to be handed over to the construction company. The new stadium, when completed, will be the largest cricket stadium in the world which will be made to meet all the latest the international standards,” a GCA press release said.

The GCA on Thursday handed over the contract to Larsen & Turbo to begin work for the makeover.
