A man travelling in a chartered jet was caught with Rs 3.5 crore in demonetised notes after his flight landed in Dimapur, the largest city in Nagaland. Security officials said the man, a Bihar-based businessperson, was being questioned about the source of the money, PTI reported.

The man was travelling with the large amount of money from Sirsa in Haryana to Dimapur, the officials said. He was apprehended after Central Industrial Security Force personnel received intelligence inputs about the presence of the discontinued currency on the flight. The case has been handed over to local Income Tax authorities, the officials added.

The report comes after Vigilance officials in Maharashtra on November 18 seized Rs 91.5 lakh in demonetised notes from a vehicle belonging to Maharashtra Cooperative Minister Subhash Deshmukh in the Osmanabad district of the state. Demanding Deshmukh’s resignation, a Congress spokesperson claimed that old currency notes worth Rs 6 crore were seized from the brother of a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA in the state.

The country has been grappling with a cash crunch since the Centre demonetised the high-value currency notes. The Supreme Court had observed that the long queues seen outside banks since the move was announced was a serious problem that could even lead to riots. The surprise decision has met with massive criticism from Opposition parties. The Congress has accused the government of pushing the country into “financial anarchy”.
