The internet adage Godwin’s law dictates that if any conversation and argument goes on long enough, comparisons to Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany are inevitable.

Much of the conversation surrounding Donald Trump and his campaign have taken a similar route. But in this case it has been difficult. A recent meeting to celebrate his victory began thus:

“Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!”

This was followed by a few members raising their right arms in the air in a Nazi-style salute, making the comparison obvious.

The video above, from The Atlantic, excerpts the speech by David Spencer, who popularised the term “alt-right” and leads the National Policy Institute, “an independent organisation dedicated to the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States, and around the world.” Spencer was appearing at a conference in Washington on Saturday.

Spencer borrowed the word “Lügenpresse” to describe journalists (popular in Nazi Germany) and added, “America was until this past generation a white country designed for ourselves and our posterity. It is our creation, it is our inheritance, and it belongs to us.” To still more cheers and Nazi salutes.
