External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday helped an ailing Indian aboard a merchant vessel near Yemen's Al Hudaydah port after his relative tweeted to her about his condition. Swaraj promptly contacted Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and the Indian Navy, seeking "emergency medical help" for Electrical Officer Devendra Singh from a naval ship close by.
The Navy responded quickly saying the matter had been taken up with Elektrans Shipping, the company Singh worked for. "Officer's condition has improved, and assistance is being provided by the company," the Navy said on Twitter, tagging Swaraj. Officials said Singh had been taken off duty and will be sent to India on Monday, according to PTI.
The external affairs minister is known to be swift in offering assistance when contacted by Indians abroad on social media.
