After Game of Thrones, Stranger Things is the latest fantasy and science fiction television series to catch the fancy of pop culture enthusiasts everywhere. And like with the adaptation of George RR Martin's book series, the fandom of Stranger Things has also extended itself into covers of the main theme.
After an Indian version of the Game of Thrones popular opening track, Chennai-based artist Krish Ashok is back with a Carnatic version of the Stranger Things main theme.
Last month, a similar desi reimagining of the Friends theme by musician Mahesh Raghvan, using mostly iPad apps, became popular. Raghvan has also done a cover of the Game of Thrones and another of BBC television show Sherlock.
Musician Tushar Lall, who is part of the Indian Jam project, covered the Pirates of the Caribbean theme using the sarangi and the flute. He also has Indianised versions of the Harry Potter theme and what else but Game of Thrones.
There’s even a fully funded Indigogo campaign for a course on how to give hit tracks a desi flavour. Indianised covers of popular western tracks seem to have become a quick way to gain viral fame, and the mission statement of Raga Labs who is behind the campaign suggests as much.
Our passion is to take raga music to the world, and we are excited to collaborate with Mahesh to help you all create hit youtube videos!
