At least two people are feared dead and nearly 400 flights were grounded as typhoon Mindulle made a landfall in Japan's Chiba prefecture on Monday, The Japan Times reported. The Japan Meteorological Agency announced that the typhoon, the season's ninth, landed on the Boso Peninsula at noon.
National broadcaster NHK reported that the the storm caused airlines across the country to cancel a total of 387 flights, mostly to and from Haneda airport in Tokyo. A total of 49,000 passengers were affected as Japan Airlines cancelled 148 domestic flights and All Nippon Airways cancelled 96 flights. Train services were delayed or cancelled in the morning in greater Tokyo and the Tokai region around Shizuoka Prefecture.
Streets were flooded as storm water coursed through otherwise placid rivers. The weather agency has alerted its citizens as it has predicted landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, surging rivers, violent wind and high waves.
The meteorological agency reported two other tropical storms, Lionrock and Kompasu, in the region. Typhoon Kompasu, which hit Japan's northern main island of Hokkaido on Sunday, had been downgraded to a temperate depression. Tropical storm Lionrock is not expected to hit Japan directly.
