Indian wrestler Babita Kumari was tactically outclassed by Greece's Maria Prevolaraki during their round of 16 match in the women's 53 kg freestyle event, going down 1-5. Prevolaraki was eliminated in the quarter-finals later, which meant that Kumari would not be in contention for a bronze medal through repechage.
Kumari started off cautiously, defending before trying to go for a take-down. Prevolaraki got her first points by taking Kumari to the far corner and pushing her out of the safety zone. Prevolaraki soon grabbed the advantage in the bout, countering Kumari's move by getting her on her back, and earning two points with a single-leg hold. At the end of the first period, Prevolaraki led 3-0.
Prevolaraki was penalised with a passivity error in the second period as Kumari got her first point. However, the match slowly slipped out of Kumari's reach though as Prevolaraki got two more points on the board with yet another take-down, switching her body swiftly to attack from behind. At the end, it was a comprehensive win for the Greek.
