Sakshi Malik progressed to the quarter-finals after beat Moldova's Mariana Cherdivara Esanu in the pre-quarters after a shaky start to the match. The score was tied at 5-5 but Malik won thanks to the single-largest score of four points in the match. Her next opponent will be Russia's Valeria Koblova in the quarters.
However, wrestler Vinesh Phogat was forced to withdraw from the quarter-finals of the women's 48 kg wrestling competition due to a serious knee injury, while trailing Chinese opponent Yanan Sun 1-2 midway through the bout.
Sun received a passivity warning and was forced to defend for 30 seconds as the Indian was awarded a point.
Phogat then went for a hold as Sun reversed it. The Indian wrestler's knee twisted horribly as she landed awkwardly and Sun was awarded two points.
Soon, a medical timeout was called as the Indian team's physiotherapist ruled that Phogat would be unable to continue. The bout was stopped and Sun was awarded the victory by injury.
