Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat won her opening bout against Romania's Emilia Vuc by technical superiority after leading by a score of 10-0 in the pre-quarter-finals of the 48-kg women's freestyle category at the Rio Olympics. Phogat, thereby, progressed to the quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old wrestler twisted her elbow early on in the match and had to take a medical break as he she went for a leg hold on her Romanian opponent. Shrugging off her elbow injury, Phogat finally put Vuc in a hold, scoring four points quickly. Vuc then suffered a cut to her forehead, and opted for a medical timeout of her own.

Vuc was then cautioned for an illegal hold, as Phogat scored two more points with another hold and take-down. The opening period ended with Phogat leading 6-0.

The Romanian started the second period as the aggressor as she was well behind on points. After Phogat took her opponent down in the red zone, she was offered four points for a fall, which would see her win the bout on technical superiority, a condition which arises when one wrestler leads 10-0.

An appeal by the Romanian contingent contesting the fall was rejected as Phogat was awarded the bout.
