Indian shuttler PV Sindhu is through to the round of 16 of the women's singles tournament at the Rio Olympics. After world No. 5 Saina Nehwal's shock exit earlier in the day, Sindhu, ranked tenth, began her group stage match being the only Indian left in the women's singles draw. However, the 21-year-old showed her pedigree as she beat Canada’s Michelle Li in three games. Sindhu staged a comeback from a game down to win the match 19-21 21-15 21-17.
In the first game, the Canadian stunned the Indian 21-19. Sindhu then upped her game to bag the second 21-15. However, the third and final game saw Sindhu control the momentum of the match and eventually bagged it 21-17 to progress to the round of 16.
Making her Olympic debut, Sindhu won her first match against Hungary’s Laura Sarosi 21-8 21-9 on Thursday.
