The Indian hockey team beat the current world No 2 side, Argentina, 2-1 in a thrilling Pool B encounter at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday. This was the first time that India had beaten Argentina since 2009. The win pushed India to second in the Pool B table, behind Germany.
Chinglensana Singh put India ahead in the first quarter itself off a penalty corner. The Indians played brilliantly in the first two quarters and did not concede a single penalty corner until the halftime hooter.
India doubled their lead minutes into the third quarter via a field goal from Kothajit Singh Khadangbam. Argentina finally won a penalty corner in the fourth quarter and lost no time in converting it as Gonzalo Peillat slotted it home past Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. Argentina won a flurry of PCs as the quarter wore on, but could not convert as Sreejesh produced a couple of world-class saves.
In the end, India maintained their one-goal lead until the final hooter to record a morale-boosting win. The Indians face the Netherlands next on Thursday.
