Former judge and chairman of Press Council of India Markandey Katju termed the Supreme Court order to the Board of Control for Cricket India to implement the Lodha panel's reforms as "illegal and unconstitutional". The 69-year-old was previously appointed as head of a BCCI legal panel to coordinate with the Lodha committee.
"What the Supreme Court has done is unconstitutional and illegal. There has been violation of principles of the Constitution," said Katju, according to PTI. "Under our Constitution, we have legislature, executive and judiciary. There is broad separation of functions. It's the legislature's prerogative to make laws. If judiciary starts making laws, one is setting a dangerous precedent."
The former judge also said that he announced the cricket body to file a review petition before a larger bench.
The Supreme Court had earlier ruled against the BCCI and given it six months time to implement the recommendations of the Justice Lodha committee. These recommendations seek to bring sweeping reform in the administration of Indian cricket.
